Sam Altman: 'ChatGPT is particularly useful in three areas'

Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, said anyone can ask ChatGPT to perform a task, but this chatbot will have a great effect in three specific industries.

In the Unconfuse Me podcast hosted by Bill Gates last week, ChatGPT boss revealed that programming is the field where ChatGPT is used on the largest scale today when it helps programmers significantly increase productivity. The two segments of health and education also have high growth rates in terms of usage volume.

According to Altman, ChatGPT helps programmers complete work three times faster than normal. Chatbots also help find errors, test, answer questions and even create completely new code.

CNBC cited research from 2023 from Stanford University and the University of California, Berkeley showing that GPT-4 incorrectly answered half of programming questions. However, if the programmer uses ChatGPT for support and proceeds cautiously, carefully checking everything the chatbot offers, programming will go faster than performing all the tasks themselves.

Sam Altman said ChatGPT's goal is to help get more done in less time, thereby leaving more time for creativity. He likened using ChatGPT to moving from punched cards to a higher-level language in early programming.

Regarding education, AI can assist teachers in creating personalized curriculum or lesson plans for each specific student. Chatbots are also useful for learning more foreign languages, as educational companies using technology like Duolingo are cutting staff and using AI more. Billionaire Bill Gates also introduced ChatGPT's ability to act as a tutor with the ability to personalize each student. Last year, the Microsoft co-founder predicted AI would become the best tutor as any teacher can be. However, some educators worry tools like ChatGPT could make it easier for students to cheat.

Finally, in the medical field, OpenAI's chatbot can benefit doctors by acting as a digital assistant, helping with time-consuming administrative tasks such as insurance procedures. diagnose or analyze and summarize a patient's medical history. Some pharmaceutical companies are also using ChatGPT to automate many parts of the discovery and research process for new drugs. However, according to experts, ChatGPT still has many errors so it will not be trusted by patients in the near future.

Sam Altman also admitted that AI technology is currently only in its infancy, but it needs to be placed in the context of ever-changing technology because in just the next 5 or 10 years, AI will make great strides.
